Summer is ......here?
Well....I think summer is here. The weather can't quite make up it's mind. Right now, I am sitting here writing you in my winter clothes, in the beginning of July! The high today was in the very low 60's and this weekend it's supposed to be in the very high 80's. Go figure!

The end of May and beginning of June brought in unusually wet weather! I don't remember ever getting this kind of rain the whole 12 years that we've lived up here. There was a lot of flooding....roads washed out....basements flooded and rivers where there had never been rivers before! It almost seemed like the weather would never dry up. Then finally, we got a break in the rain, and over time things went mostly back to normal. Still, the unseasonably cold weather hangs around.

Even with all of the crazy weather, June was still a busy month. Our son turned 5 in the beginning of the month. (Where does the time go? It seems like he was just a little baby!) We had a little celebration out at the cottage, with friends and family. We invited over some of his little friends from school and T-ball to spend the afternoon enjoying the pond and playing. The mosquitos weren't invited, but they seemed to make themselves right at home near the pond with all of the kids and adults sitting outside. With all of the rain, they were just terrible this spring! Thank goodness things have dried up a bit and so have the mosquitoes!

The photo above was taken at his birthday party. The children spent a lot of time in the pond playing. It was a good day.

The cottage rental is going well. Our summer is just about booked solid. We've had a lot of people stay and enjoy the place. A couple of our renters even got to see our bear this year. He was seen twice within 4 days! Both were day time sightings, which is rare. Most of the time he/she comes through very late at night. One family saw it at our bird feeders around 10 in morning and a few days later, another group saw the bear while driving back to the property. It was standing next to the drive and when it saw their car, it took off running.

We've had other wildlife encounters around that time. One afternoon when I was driving over to the cottage to clean it for the renters, I noticed a fawn staggering along the edge of the main road. The first thing that when through my mind was that the little guy got hit. So, I drove over to the beginning of our driveway to the cottage and parked the car. I got out and walked over to where I had seen the little guy and noticed him just on the other side of the ditch. So I jumped the ditch and walked over to him. When I got over to him, he looked like Bambi on ice...with his legs out bracing himself and somewhat crouched down position. I stood over him and moved the ferns out of the way, so I could take a look at him. I didn't see any blood or broken legs. He was a tiny little thing and I realized that he must have been a very new fawn. He was probably staggering because he didn't have his balance down yet. Mom was probably nearby, so I decided say something to him to see if I'd get a reaction and move him away from the busy road. He jumped up the best he could, bounding off on an awkward, zig-zagging run towards the woods. Just then another one took off from my right. I assume it was his twin. Once they were both away from the road, I went back to my car and headed to the cottage for a fun day of cleaning. (NOT!)

July 3rd was a busy day in Sugar Springs. There was the annual arts & crafts show across the street from our house. Last year, our daughter had a lemonade stand in our driveway and did very well. Of course, this year both of the kids wanted to do the same thing. So I bought 12 cans of frozen lemonade, plastic cups and a lot of ice and got them all set up for a busy day. They sold over $50 in lemonade sales in 4 hours! WOW! Before the end of the craft show, I divvied up the cash between the two of them and we went shopping across the street. Our daughter bought some jewelry and a chair made out of PVC pipe. Our son bought a shiny Petosky stone and a wooden truck that one of the crafters had made.

That evening, we went down to the public boat launch to watch the fireworks. The kids and I sat up on top of one of the fire trucks that were standing by and we got a great view of the show. As usual, Sugar Springs put on a spectacular fireworks display. It was a great way to wrap up a busy day with family!

Well.... Until next month!

Sincerely,  Ivie Baker
