| I'm back and ready for a busy summer! | ||||||||
| May was a busy and fun month for me and the family. On May 1st, we took a big break from all of the busyness up here and made our way to Orlando Florida for a week of fun and family time. This was the first big trip that we've all taken together and it was a blast. I can't say that it was a "Rested" vacation, considering our planned trip of 5 days straight of Disney World, but as far as memorable family time, it was worth every dime we spent, (and we spent a lot of them!). On the 1st, we flew out early in the morning from Flint Airport. (Just a tip: If you are looking for the best rates on airline tickets....don't fly out of Detroit. Flint had the best prices by far!) This was the first time that both of our kids remember riding in an airplane. Our daughter flew once when she was just 1 ½ years old, but doesn't remember it and our son had never been on a big plan before. Much of the time during the flight, they tried to look down through the clouds and all of the little houses and roads. Much of the way down there it was quite cloudy. It didn't start clearing up until at least 2/3 of they way down there. We arrived in Florida around 10:30 in the morning. It was warm and wonderful! The sun was out and it was already in the mid 70's and climbing! After all of the hustle and bustle at the airport, collecting our luggage, keeping tabs on the kids and securing a shuttle to the hotel, we finally made it to our hotel. We spent the rest of the day relaxing at the pools and planning the days ahead. That evening, my mother-in-law arrived. She had driven down from South Carolina and had been spending the last few days at a friends house in Orlando. We had invited her to spend the first part of our vacation with us at Disney, so that she could enjoy the time with the kids. Our first day of Disney was spent at Typhoon Lagoon. We spent a lot of time on the water slides and floating around the park on enter-tubes most of the afternoon. It was nice to cool off from the hot Florida weather. On our second day, it rained on and off. We decided that it would be a good day to visit Epcot, because there is a lot of inside stuff to do at that park. Of course, there is never enough time. We tried to visit all of the countries and do all of the rides, but the park was just so large! Our most favorite country to visit came at dinner time. We decided to go to the German Restaurant because my husband liked the fact that it was "All You Can Eat Buffet". The food was fantastic, and the entertainment was just as wonderful. At 6 pm there was a live German band that played, and they were amazing! What was even better, was watching the kids go out on the dance floor and dance with the other children. When the music first started, our daughter was one of the first kids out there. We were still eating, so we weren't able to go out with her just yet. She came up to us wanting to dance. I told her to dance with her brother until we were finished with dinner. Just then, the German Chef came up to her and asked her if she'd like to dance. Of course, she went right out there and danced with him. After the song was done, the chef headed back to the kitchen to get back to cooking. On the 3rd day, we decided to visit the Animal Kingdom. That was a really neat place. We got to see a lot of different animals. The Safari ride was really neat, because they drive you out there right where all of the animals are. The kids saw many of these animals for the first time on this ride. One the 4th day, we visited the Magic Kingdom. This park is set up more for smaller children and ours had a great time. They got to see most of the Disney characters and get their pictures taken with them. We wrapped up our day there with the evening fireworks which were quite beautiful. On our 5th and last day at Disney, we split our day between MGM Studios and Blizzard Beach. We started out at MGM, where one of the first shows we went to see was the Indiana Jones Adventure. This show has some of the audience participate in the show. Of course, my husband was load enough to get picked to participate in the show. At the beginning they had some of the participants do silly things. They asked Jim to walk silly like a girl. He looked around like "Yeah ...RIGHT!" and proceeded to walk like an overly macho guy instead of what the people in the show asked him to do. The audience loved that.... Then they asked him to act like he just got shot and to really play it up! Well, he sure did! He staggered all over the stag, moving some of the props and making it a very long and exaggerated death. The audience laughed hysterically! Of course, I got this all captured on video. Early that afternoon, we decided that it was getting a bit hot and thought that it may be a good time to visit Blizzard Beach. So we left MGM and went to where we could cool off. We spent the rest of the afternoon on water slides and enjoying the water. Much of the afternoon, our daughter was trying to talk us into going on "Summit Plummet", a sky-scraping sized water slide that's 120 ft tall that drops you down the slopes of Mt Gushmore at about 55 miles per hour for a 360-ft long trip back down to the bottom. Well, needless to say, we weren't too thrilled about the idea of jumping on a slide that high...so we skirted around the subject with her most of the day. Then, she talked Dad on going on the "Slush Gusher" which was also a tall side, but didn't look nearly as menacing. I stayed at the kiddie beach with our 4 year old son while they went on the big slide. According to my husband, they got in line and there was quite a wait. Of course, our daughter noticed that "Summit Plummet" was just next to this slide and that the line was much shorter. She managed to talk Jim into taking her onto "Summit Plummet". As they were in line, there was a small group of strong burley lookin' guys standing behind them. They pointed to our petite 7 year old daughter and asked my husband if she was actually going to go on this one. Of course she was...she talked him into it! When they got to the top, there were a few people that chickened out, including one of the big burley guys waiting behind them. Jim was even a bit hesitant. It was a looooonnnnnng way down there. But not our daughter! Jim wasn't even sure if he wanted to let her go down, but she insisted and before he knew it, there she went! After she went down, Jim was still having second thoughts. He saw her at the bottom waving to him after she got off of the slide. He let one of the others go ahead of him as he rethought this....but then he knew that she was waiting at the bottom waiting for him and he'd never live it down if he didn't make the plunge! So he did it. When he met her at the bottom, she had a smile from ear to ear. She was pretty proud of herself! She still calls Dad chicken, though, because he didn't go down right after her. We closed out Blizzard Beach at around 5:30 and headed back to MGM Studios, where we caught a few more rides, including the "Tower of Terror". Our son was even just tall enough to go on that one. This ride is like a giant elevator that takes you through the Tower and then drops you and brings you back up and drops you again. Our son did not care for that ride at all. Just a bit to scary for him! We wrapped up our last night at Disney with a spectacular light and laser show at the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater at MGM. Out of all of the nighttime shows, this was probably the best one! They use wall of water to display a movie with lasers and lights. It's almost impossible to describe, but it was more than dazzling! It wrapped up a wonderful vacation at Disney World that evening and memories that we will never forget. Well.... I think I made this newsletter more than long enough. I just had so much to tell! Until next month!!!!!!!!! Sincerely, Ivie Baker P.S. If you know of anyone who is looking to buy or sell real estate in the area, feel free to give me a call.
