| PUMPKIN TIME! | ||||||||
| Well, Fall is officially here. The leave have changed color and fallen from the trees, the sky is full of migrating geese and various birds, preparing for the travel to warmer weather. The sunsets are now blazing in warm shades of red, orange and yellow and the air is full of the fall smell of dried leaves. I'm writing you from our cottage in the woods. We finally got a chance to enjoy the cottage between rentals. We still have most of the weekends rented out, but we've managed to find time to stay out here during the week. Friday I'll have to clean the place up and prepare it for the next group coming here to stay the weekend. The kids have been having a lot of fun raking the leaves into tall piles and diving into them over and over again. I took some cute pictures of them playing in the leaves. It's so peaceful out here. No cars driving by. Just us and the wildlife....and of course, the occasional phone call. (I can never get away from that! Ha Ha) The bear hasn't been around in a few weeks. That's good news for our bird feeders, since he's already slowly destroyed one of bird feeders over the warmer months. The kids are looking forward to Halloween. Our daughter has decided that she is going to be an angel and our son hasn't decided yet. Of course, he's probably too young to care. He's looking more forward to carving pumpkins and collecting candy. Hunting season is just around the corner and we are looking forward to the hunt. It's not just the hunt that's a thrill, but just sitting out and observing nature is fun. We always see interesting critters making their way through the woods. Often the smaller deer will get so close to me and not even know that I am even there. They might look at me a little funny, trying to figure out what I might be. I'm not much of a doe hunter, so their always safe when they are around me. I enjoy watching the occasional rabbit, ruffled grouse, woodpecker and turkey come by my patch. Of course, there are always lots of squirrels to entertain me through my day. Sometimes they jump right up onto my blind and stare at me, while they try to make me move, so that they can chatter at me with their scolding! Years ago when we were up hunting in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I had a very curious little red squirrel that visited me every day that I hunted. No sooner would I get settled into my hunting blind and I'd see him bouncing down my hunting lane towards me. He had discovered the acorns that I had hidden in the pockets of my blind. I had been feeding them to the deer, but had a stash hidden in the blind. After a couple of days, I started hiding some of the acorns under my legs and in my coat pockets. He'd jump right onto my lap and find those acorns and hop down to burry them somewhere in the forest. One day, I had left a small bag of lemon drops in the pockets of my blind, thinking they would be safe. Wouldn't you know it, but one afternoon after I left to get some lunch, that little guy stole all of my lemon drops and left me with none! I can only guess that he buried those all over the forest as well. I played this game with that silly little squirrel that whole week we hunted. I wish you a wonderful fall season! Oh! I just built a new web site. Please check it out when you get some time. http://GladwinRealEstateAgent.com Until next month! Sincerely, Ivie Baker P.S.
